At the end of the trip! We've been on the road since Saturday morning. From Kauai to Oahu. To Pearl Harbor on Saturday, overnight, then to LA on Sunday. Overnight in LA and then to Atlanta on Monday. Oops! Mechanical difficulties in LA force us into Atlanta just after the last flight out to KW leaves. So, we were the guest of Delta overnight in Atlanta last night - for me, second time this month. It was stormy out so we went north to Hanalei this time to visit the St. Regis hotel. Probably the fanciest place on Kauai, it lived up to it's reputation of having the best view on the island. It is an opulent property with 9 stories (!) of windows overlooking Hanalei Bay and the Bali Hai rock, Mt. Makena. Although we've been there before, it was not when the hotel was a St. Regis. We admired the view and took pictures, remembering past visits fondly. Fortun...

Had a great two days. Yesterday, January 25 we were on the South Shore. Went to the botanical gardens first. We missed the tour time, but no problem, were able to walk around 10 acres of the grounds. Saw an amazing tree that had smooth, multi-colored trunk. Wish I had stopped to ask the name of it - very unusual. Also saw wild ginger, a huge aloe and many un-identifiable flowers. We went to beaches fairly close to home today. Lyngate Park is a state park that is only 5 minutes away. Initially we went to feed the chickens and Bob wanted to show me where his morning meeting was located. What a wonderful site! There is a grove of 5 picnic tables in kind of a circle and the meeting is not 15 feet from the sea. They see the morning sunrise every day. The beach is beautiful. There is quite a bit of driftwood and flotsam/jetsam. No shells...

Spent the afternoon on Monday at the lighthouse. It's very much a nature preserve with albatross, red footed boobies and frigate birds resting and nesting. The flightless goose, the Nene is also on the grounds. Saw many whales in the distance and spinner dolphins. Dinner at a local plate lunch place. Hawaiian plate lunches are served round the clock with protein, rice,macaroni salad or (thank God) regular salad. Then to a meeting. Lovely day!
