back home!, UK
Six weeks away was very short. I must remember to go away for longer next time!! I had a wonderful trip, saw some amazing things and met lots of great people. I spent three and a half weeks travelling down through Vietnam. To begin with I did some trekking up in the mountains on the border with China. I met a lot of local tribeswomen, all with perfect English learned from the tourists.
After this was a tour of Halong bay; a beautiful bay speckled with nearly 2000 islands. Watching the sunset as we jumped from the boat into the sea was a definite highlight.
I arrived in Hue after an overnight bus trip to find it flooded, everywhere was knee deep in water. Fortunately this had receeded by the next day and I did a tour of the de-militarized zone and the Vinh Moc tunnels where the Vietnamese hid for 3 years during the American War.
I visited Hoi An, Nha Trang and Dalat but there was still a lot of rain so I continued fairly quickly.
Saigon, in the South was hot and sunny again. I visited the Cu Chi tunnels where the Viet Cong hid food and weapons during the war. These were a lot smaller than the Vinh Moc tunnels and I did not go down! I spent a further three days in this bustling city and learned a lot more about the American war at the War Remnants museum.
I travelled into Cambodia on a boat up the Mekong River which was definitely the most relaxing way to do it. In Phnom Penh I visited the killing fields and genocide museum and learned about the thousands of people killed by the Khmer Rouge only thirty years ago.
The biggest attraction in Cambodia are the temples at Angkor. These temples, the most famous of which is Angkor Wat, took me three whole days to view properly. At the end of this I was definitely in need of a rest on the beach so headed down south. Here I found some deserted idyllic islands and beaches, the perfect end to my holiday.
On my way back I had an overnight stop in Kuala Lumpur so I spent a few hours in this busy city. It was such a contrast from everywhere else I had been.
I definitely want to go back to Cambodia as there were so many places I wish I had had time to see. I want to combine it with Thailand and Laos next time!!
