We've had an amazing few days staying with Miki's friend Monica and her husband Alessandro in their town about an hour north of Venice. They picked us up from the station on Sunday and after a hearty pasta dish at home we headed off to Trieste. It was a beautiful drive with the Alps to the North and a rugged coastline from which you could see to Slovenia and Croatia.
Just out of the city was beautiful Miramare Castle, situated on a rocky outcrop. The city itself had an extremely grand square that is very important in Italy. There was a chilly wind blowing in off the mountains. That night Monica made us a delicious traditional chicken dish from the area.
Yesterday we headed for Monica's hometown of Grado that is on an island connected via bridge. A beautiful town, it has two nice beaches that get packed in summer, a lovely old historic area with crumbling buildings and a beautiful church with Roman mosaics on the floor. We stopped at Monica's parents for lunch. Her Dad is a fisherman and we had the best seafood ever! A delicious scallop pasta dish and then fresh calamari. Yum!
After lunch we headed to Aquiela, which used to be the second biggest Roman city and had some interesting remains. The church had a massive and very beautiful Roman mosaic floor that had been built over and only found in the early 1900's. They were getting ready for January 6th when they burn witch effigies on bonfires. We were pretty tired by then and went home and had delicious pizza!
