After leaving the Galapagos Islands, we moved on to the coastal town of Montanita, following a regretful farewell to our Swedish friends Ulf, Per & Thea. Montanita is renowned for having some of the best waves in Ecuador and I revelled in the opportunity to surf twice a day between the main point break and the beachies sweeping the coastline. The whole stretch of Montanita picks up plenty of swell, so there was no shortage of waves or.. wipeouts during our stay! One of our English travelling buddies, Leyton bravely chose to learn to surf on a particularly onshore day- he impressively managed to make it out to the back of the lineup on a 10 foot longboard about 2 minutes before a freak set convinced him that learning to surf could wait for another day.
A vibrant party town, we quickly forgot about our surfing war wounds by sinking a few coldies and dancing it up until sunrise! Every street corner boasted a funky pub, restaurant or coffee lounge and most of these would transform into Latino dance venues as the night sped on. We partied with a great mix of travelling buddies, Leyton & Anna , Steve & Elena, Johnno,Isa and every local that would have us in their company. The girls received plenty of attention from the friendly locals on the dance floor and the lads were more than happy to rest at the bar with a pint( on every second song) while the girls danced at an arms length with the respectful locals...If any of the locals got too excited one of the lads would stroll over, gesture the imposed arms length restriction and our overt surveillance of their dance activities and return to travel tales at the bar.
Getting out of bed was made easier each morning with the perfect full breakfast at a nearby cafe-Toast, eggs, cheese, tomato, fruit salad, freshly squeezed fruit juice and coffee/tea was unmissable even when we happened to rise more towards lunchtime than breakfast...
Surf, partying, great food and great company made the few days we spent in Montanita a very memorable Ecuadorian experience indeed!
