Dear familiy and friends,
our trip to Mexico was not without complications. First our ICE hit a wild pig - and you can imagine how relieved we where when we heard it was a pig. Anyways, the police had to come and free our train to continue which ate up our security buffer and we arrived in Frankfurt last minute. In Toronto we landed in a snow storm. Which was somehow ok for landing, but delayed our depature to Cancun for two hours. But finally we arrived well.
To flee from the mass of American tourists we drove out of Cancun early next day to head for Merida. On the way we stopped and spent most of the day at Chichen Itza - one of the most important Maya sites in Mexico (foto). The intelligence of this culture was impressing: The main pyramide is constructed in a way that when you stand in front of it and clap your hands, the echo sounds like the shout of their sacred bird - just to give one example.
The last day of the year we then used to relax - and spend most of the day at the beach in Progreso. In the evening we wanted to join the "party with a lot of people and lights in the center" - announced as such from the lady in our hostel. Well, we have to say we did not find the crowds nor the lights. But in the end we found a nice bar with live music and some nice people. In good Mexican tradition we received hats with "happy new year", little whistles and grapes. You have to eat the grapes and make for each one a whish for the next year. So all the best for you all and for us ( ;) ) in the new year.
Today we visited cenotes - underground lakes - that are all over Yucatan (State of Mexico). You normally jump off some rock into the cristal clear water. Veeery nice. And a good close for our stay in Mexico. Because fortune has decided: We could not get any hotel/hostel in Tulum where we wanted to go next. We therefore decided to continue already on to Belize tomorrow. The next stop is Corozal to continue to the northern cayes for some diving.
Yours,
Maarten & Anna

Ria & Kees Hoi Anna & Maarten, dat klnkt allemaal erg goed!! Geniet van al het moois dat jullie tegenkomen en we kijken uit naar de volgende berichten.
Dominik Waystone Hey! we can meet up in Argentina mid of March ;) I'm just thinking of going there!
