The lesson learned today is that your GPS in a rental vehicle may not always be up-to-date. It turns out that the GPS in our car was not loaded with the most current information. We approached some construction on our route and we were not able to reroute our directions. This normally would not pose a problem when in familiar surroundings (or even a familiar country) but it can definitely pose an issue when travelling abroad, not knowing the local routes or language. Our GPS did tell us that there may be traffic disruptions on route, but did not indicate any alternate directions to our destination.
Yes, we got lost. But, WOW, did we ever find some interesting places we would never have found otherwise.
Travelling without GPS from Kronberg to Wurzburg, and then from Rothenburg to Fussen, we came across towns, hamlets and villages that are off the beaten path. Beautiful little places with just as much history as their bigger, more known neighbours. In comparison to the big cities, not as many landmarks to see, but the people in these places were thrilled to see us. They smiled and waved. Probably because these places rarely see tourists. The towns and villages were unique and really difficult to navigate with their winding roads and dead end streets, but each more interesting than the last.
The scenery was beautiful (especially on the Romantik Strasse route from Rothenburg to Fussen) and we stopped a few times to take pictures. We laughed at the odd things we saw because they were so random (cover picture).
We came across a military town where a parachuting operation was occuring. Hundreds of parachuters were "dropped" from planes a few times - a breathtaking sight for sure.
One lane highways with no shoulders made for some interesting driving and we were very late getting to our destinations both days. I consider these days blessings in disguise because of the sights and the experience.
We will have to get lost more often as it leads to great story telling.
