Maintaining your diet can be a lot harder to do when you travel. Keeping up the same regime of carbs and proteins can be tricky when the food offered is very different across countries. I am a very picky eater at home, so my diet when I travel is pretty bland.
Living in North America, one could assume we are pretty spoiled when it comes to food storage and preparation. You could even assume that we are over cautious. Example: we refrigerate all of our meat and dairy, yet there are many parts of the world that do not. We pasteurize our dairy, while a lot of countries do not. This is just one of the inconsistencies I have noticed. Who notices things like this? Well, someone who is as picky as I when it comes to eating. I have never called myself a non-meat eater but when I travel; fruits and vegetables, and pastas are my staple.
I have made it a goal of mine to try new foods in the places I visit. However, I never noticed how many weird local delicacies there are and I just have not been able to get up the courage to try them all. I always go in open-minded; most times it gets closed before the opportunity even presents itself.
I tried haggis in Scotland and I actually quite enjoyed it - surprisingly. I say I was surprised because I know how it is made and I know what it is made of. Our group was served a delicious recipe to sample (it was prepared really well) and I have told everyone I know to give it a taste if they ever travel to Scotland. The experience did not make me a regular connoisseur of the dish, but I am glad to have tried.
I wonder just how brave I will be when I come across some kind of insect appetizer, or exotic dish that really just seems to out-of-this-world for me. Who really wants to eat a ram's testicle or fermented whale? I will be travelling to Iceland in a few months and I can honestly say that while I write this I have no plans to try either of these local delicacies -that, I will leave for my travelling companion. He is willing to try anything.
