We have arrived in the magical green leprechaun land! Everywhere you turn- GREEN. Green balloons, banners, clothes, hats, costumes galore. The atmosphere oozes excitement and fun. People are everywhere as Em and I drag our 30kg suitcases over the cobblestone streets with 10kg bags flung over our shoulders. Sleet falling as we navigate our way through the crowds to our hotel on fleet st.
One thing we realise very quickly is the lack of Irish accents and the overwhelming tourist atmosphere. Dublin is riddled with Americans and the French.
All checked in we pop into the pub for our first Guinness of the St Patricks weekend. Sitting at a table we enjoy a couple of hours with two guys and two girls from Austria. Good fun trying to work through the language barrier. Next pub there was fantastic traditional music and a large crowd, we found ourselves some bar stools and settled in. Scared for our lives as this extremely old second story wooden floor bent as the crowd jumped around heel tapping to the Irish tunes.
Amazing central accommodation in Temple Bar had the one down side of being extremely noisy - horns, screams, yelling and club music but alas we are in Ireland for St Paddys. We would have been out amongst the revellers if it wasnt for the fact when we woke in Dubai that morning for our flight it was 1am in Dublin and of course wanted to have our game faces on the next morn/day.
About 5:30am the streets of Dublin are finally quiet for almost half an hour till the chatter of rubbish men start and one in particular cackling like hyena.
Emily and I were wide awake at 6am (probably ready for dinner). Force ourselves back to sleep and woke again at 10am, this time wanting to stay in bed, love jetlag. We here a wind band out our window and the ally starts to fill with voices and footsteps. Time for showers and off to the Dublin St Patricks Day Parade. Not before emailing my Grandad to wish him a happy st paddys day birthday. Mini freak out when ATM was rejecting card and I became cashless but a few calls home and I was saved from trouble and my card was active yet again.
We braved the cold and found a little possie perched on a gate to view the parade. Festive feeling in the air, people from all over the world to celebrate a day in which none of us know the meaning. Good times.
Weather deteriorates so we ditch the jackets, scarves and gloves and head to the pub next door to our hotel, amazing tunes, incredible crowd and bundles of fun. We meet some Aussies who decided to then brave the weather to try something else, but with it looking miserable outside, our jackets next door and great fun we decided there is no reason to fix something that is not broken and stayed put. We made friends with a group from France who we partied the night away with. Full of life with a fantastic Mr Fox whistle to find each other amongst packed Dublin.
Next morning we had to check out and move to another place for our last night. As we booked our flight into Dublin before our way out and were left with no way out on the 18th due to heavy bookings so added an extra night and departed on the 19th.
Pretty slow day, brunch, attempted study, hot choc, nap, then back to the pub for a delicious meal, cider and tunes. To land on our beds soon after midnight was bliss. A few hours sleep before our ferry to Wales and train to London. Whoop. The adventure continues.
