Hervey Bay & Fraser Island...
So we arrive in Hervey Bay on the 30th of January for one night before the big 3 days on Fraser Island...! We went to a meeting that evening then it was off to bed to get a good nights sleep....!!!
5.30 the next morning it was up, packed, loaded the 4x4 and off we went... We boarded the ferry from River Heads over the the Creek landing point and it was all rock n roll from there...!
Off road was an understatement...! We set off to find Lake Basin... one of the many fresh water lakes hidden in the rainforests...!! And after an unexpected 5.6km walk we found it....! I get the feeling at this point that there was going to be a lot more walking involved in this trip than i expected...! And i couldnt of been any closer to the truth.... over the 3 days we must have walked a good thrity five miles....! It was mental...!
We set up camp both nights.... up went the tents, out come the cooking gear and dinner was off the al a carte menu.... and cooked by my goodself...! Steak and boiled rice here we come...! I turned my back for 2 minutes and what one of the other guys thought was oil.... he applied to the steaks and pan.... only to find out is was bast#*d washing up liquid.... I've never washed my steaks up before cooking them before....!!! we managed to salvage them and all was ok....!
Day 2 and off up to Indian Heads to see the sharks, Turtles, Dolphins and Sea Cows from a 1000ft view point..... it was amazing...! Then it was onto the next 10km walk up to the Champagne Pools.... another set of small fresh water pools set in the rainforest.... awsome...!
After that it was a walk back to the 4x4's.... off the the service station to fill the eskys up with ice to keep the food, but more importantly, the beer cold....! Cooked some lunch then off to the next sand dune and lake it was...!
We set up camp near Lake Wabby for night two.... and partied on down until the early hours with a good group of 10 Irish lads...! They had packed well for the trip... 6 bottles of vodka, 32 litres of the finest goon and 15 slabs of beer....! Good luck to them....!
Day three and the sun was up early and so where we....!
Time to pack up camp, have some breakfast and then off to the daddy'o of them all... Lake McKenzie...! And it was my turn to drive....! Shelia (the jeep) had looked after us well up to now.... but it was time to see what she was really made of.... the route to McKenzie was the steepest, roughest and toughest of them all....! And hats off to her.... she did well....! I get her stuck twice needing to be dug out.... and she nearly rolled over once in the hands of another driver.... that was an experinece i wouldnt like to have again...!
After McKenzie it was time to make our way back to the ferry port and over to the mainland...! What an amazing trip, loved every minute of it...!
back on shore and off to Bundaburg tomorrow...!
