Once we had left Queenstown our journey continued over to Doubtful Sound where we boarded the Nautilus for an overnight cruise. We saw a whale , heard a blue penguin ( no it was not telling rude jokes! they just hide in the bushes). We also heard a kiwi which is a nocturnal bird and therefore seldom seen. The sandflies were extremely annoying as it was a very calm day. We sailed out into the roaring 40's of the Tasman sea before returning to the shelter of the sound.
After our cruise it was back on the coach down the presidential highway going through Gore and Clinton before eventually reaching Dunedin where we had the ceremony of the Haggis and both John and I plus another John ended up volunteering ! to be part of the proceedings. I may have missed the Burns night at home but I did get some Haggis. Robert Burns' nephew was one of the founding fathers of Dunedin.
Whilst in Dunedin we took the opportunity to see the yellow eyed penguin which is a less social bird than any other species of penguin and although returning to the same nesting grounds each year tends to be more isolated.
After Dunedin we went on to Lake Ohau via the Moeraki boulders, a great geological curiosity. At lake Ohau we had fantastic views of Mount Cook.
We are now back in Christchurch for two nights before heading for Australia.
