In my opinion no self-respecting 'Off Exploring' blog can be written solely from within 100 miles of your place of birth, so from that perspective this entry alone should add some much needed credibilty to this site...we've arrived in Kenya!
Finishing work and moving out of our house occupied late March and early April, and we were certainly in need of some R&R with families before leaving the UK yesterday. We were lucky in being able to see a few people in between but sadly we quickly realised we did not have sufficient time to see enough people for enough time.
Keeping to the 69kgs p/person luggage limit saw us debating the various merits of hand gel, socks and phrase books. At least there was space for a few essential supplies (e.g. chocolate!) at the request of people we'll be staying with. Future visitors take note please ;)
Concerns over a second volcanic eruption and further BA strikes proved thankfully unfounded and we waved goodbye to the UK (specifically our parents) at Heathrow on Saturday morning. A smooth flight provided a long awaited chance to catch up on recent films; Shutter Island, Invictus, and Men Who Stare At Goats were all enjoyed this time.
Our 6 large suitcases periodically emerged from the baggage area and we located our pre-booked taxi. The driver very efficiently fitted the bags in his vehicle but it soon became apparent that he wasn't quite as sure of the exact location of our destination. However, one swift conversation with a passer-by dealt with that situation and we were soon met by a very warm welcome at Ben & Helen Clark's Nairobi apartment.
Ben & Helen moved here from Southampton last year and have been absolute legends, helping us get set up, passing on local knowledge and showing us round. Thanks to Dan & Becky Rivett for putting us in contact! Time so far has been dominated by revision for Becky's physio exams this week. There are no past papers and the subject areas are extremely broad, so the exam experience will be something of an unknown quantity! Once the exams are finished we'll be heading up to Kimilili to join up with IcFEM, and we'll update the blog with progress soon.
