The first night in the camper was an experience enough in itself, without having to battle with bloody mosquitos, however it was suitably atmospheric watching the sun come up between the headrests whilst trying to unstick myself from the partially deflated air bed.
Bob and I enjoyed an envigorating early morning jog along the seafront returning to find Mark brandishing a huge grin and a paper detailing England's cricketing woes. He also announced his intentions to run the 3km (and 100m climb) round to the next bay for a team swim... This gave Bob her first stint in control of 'The Enema' and a huge sack of girl power points from Olivia and Isabelle!
A cooling dip in the black sand waters of Tutukaka harbour and a swim out to the oyster beds surrounding the island in the bay set us up perfectly for the long drive north. I was swiftly ousted from the Enema as Bob chauffeured Olivia, co-pilot and music co-ordinateur, to the tune of Taylor swift on repeat. Meanwhile, in the Georgetti mobile, I struggled to be as exciting as Bob and resorted to the political undertones and complex adult humour of 'Charlie and the chocolate factory'.
After 8 renditions of 'Shake it off' we arrived at the glow worm caves in Waikomo and following a speedy pic-nic we descended into the caverns to marvel at the galaxies of invertebrates stuck to the ceiling in a battle for survival. After Mark retrieved his jandle (flip flop) from the abyss we returned to the cars and headed on towards the bay of islands, this time Isabelle was DJing for Princess Bob in the girlfunbus and I continued to try and interpret the vibrant imagination of Roald Dahl.
Bob arrived at the motel in Paihia with Taylor swift having rocketed to being the most played song in her iTunes. We booked into a campsite and made the most of the wifi connection, reporting back to Blighty parents, and making plans to catch up with Jono and Mr and Mrs Marsh later in the week.
A swift look around the tourist info did not help to shortlist the range of possible activities for the following day, but fish, chips and beer on the pier was marvellous topped only by one of the saga tourists getting everybody dancing to The Chattanooga Choo Choo around the piano on the sea front.
We retired early in readiness for our 745 departure to see the bay and harass its dolphins
