Not having had to deal with any stress for the past 2 months did not prepare us well for the final day of selling the car. We headed straight back to the auction centre, to establish our guaranteed fall back where a mechanic would assess the car, sending out a report to his buyers to see who, if anyone, was keen. As we waited for the auction house to open we noticed 2 backpackers poking around the compound, obviously 'in the market'. I pounced with all my second hand salesman charm and the 2 Argentinian ski instructors were soon being taken for a testdrive as Bob delivered the sales pitch! They liked what they saw, and what we told them but wisely they wanted to see what else was around and headed off after exchanging numbers.
We took a brief, nervous walk around Auckland, accosting any back packers or hostel foyers but there were not even any vague interests taken. After avery much needed coffee and muffin stop we returned to the auction house for the mechanic to deliver his verdict. A measley $1000. I was glad I was sitting down but this wasn't unexpected. It was time for a nervous phonecall to the Argies...
They were out looking at cars and would ring back in an hour, during which time the Enema couldn't leave the auction house. It was horrible, Bob bit her fingernails down to the quicks, I stalked around in a cold sweat, but after 68 minutes the phonecall came through, they wanted the Enema!!!
We danced a little jig outside the strip club in front of which we had inadvertently wandered, high fiving and whooping. It gave me great pleasure to tell the auction house they couldn't have our beloved imposter campervan and we roared away to drop our bags at the hotel.
We picked up our new best friends from a greasy spoon in the downtrodden suburbs we knew so well from the day before. They were almost as excited as we were and the journey back to the city centre was spent imparting the wisdom we could and trying not to allow the brakes or AC to squeak too loudly.
No sooner as we had arrived at their apartment I had a fistful of US dollars and they had the keys. We left our third musketeer in the capable hands of our chance acquaintances knowing that she was going to have an exciting onward journey.
We celebrated by lying on the bed in our hotel room and doing blissfully nothing, we were exhausted both physically and emotionally and felt like a huge weight had been lifted. After an hour we felt refreshed and it was finally time to see Auckland. The weather had other ideas so we put off plans for sightseeing until Saturday, had a burger in a sports bar and went to the cinema to see the seventh fast&furious film.
It was a good film but the grin on my face was from the sale earlier in the day and it made for a much better nights sleep.
