Arrived in Fiji in the evening, and checked into our hostel and then went straight to do our washing. We are leaving all our valuables and most of our bags on the main island and just take the essentials as apparently you dont need a lot. Had a nice teriaki snapper for tea and went to bed early.
The next morning we set off for our first island (mantaray) where we were going diving. It was not what i expected at all. basically all the islands have one resort so you pay for your accomodtaion and your 3 meals a day before you go and then any drinks and activities on top of that are put on a tab. The dorm had about 40 beds in it that were split into mini cubicles. We were sharing with 2 english girls but they had bed bugs and werent very friendly so we avoided them mainly. It was a gorgeous day so went to the beach and did nothing for the first time in a month! It was bliss. The sun sets on the other side of the island so i got up about 4pm for a shower as they are cold and i needed to cool down.
We went to the main bure for dinner which was a curry buffet and was lovely and then we went straight to bed (8:30pm!). I slept for 12hours and woke up to breakfast being called at 8am the next morning. We got up and ate our buffet breakfast which was lovely and then boarded a boat to take us to a local village where we were visiting the school and also the craft fair. the kids were very cute and all sang for us but then they literally jump all over you so i was glad to give them back after 10 minutes. We then went to the church and the craft fair, and our guide (Va) showed us her house. She said she would like to spend her 21st birthday (next May) in England. I felt so sorry for her because she must see girls her own age everyday like me and Gem travelling the world without a care and she wants the same thing so badly but i dont know how she would save the money as she is just a local guide, and we all paid $3 landing fee (less than 1 pound) and she will only get a fraction of that!
In the afternoon we sunbathed but it was a bit cloudy so we went to the other side of the island and watched the sunset with a glass of wine and a packet of pringles...Perfect!! Tonight we had a full meal. Tomato soup followed by curried Marlin and then I had Sausage and Mash for mains. We went to bed straight after tea again as for some reason i was exhausted and we were diving the next day.
We got up early for diving and were left hanging around for nearly an hour while they sorted themselves out. We had been told they were a fantatstic company (and the only one on the island so we didnt have much choice)...but we got in a tiny boat which was secure (as a tank fell on Gem) and then got thrown about all over the place as it was really windy. Then when we got to the place where we dived the Dm said "where are we" and the leader had no compass on, so when we submerged we had no idea where we were and had to swim 10 minutes against the current to the dive site, so by the time we got there i had hardly any air, and was knackered and then the dive site was rubbish, and we didn't see anything.
When we surfaced and got back on the boat the sea was so rough that we felt sick and neither of us weanted to do the 2nd dive, so we got asked to go back to the resort. In the afternoon we went snorkeling with Mantarays which was amazing and made me wish we hadn't bothered diving as this was cheaper and 100 times better. But other people we met said they had great dives there so i think we were just really unlucky.
That night they the local village we had visited came to the island and did a show and we got talking to some nice lads who were leaving tomorrow but had been to beach comber which was our next stop so they gave us some tips which was nice.
