Easter Sunday. Another hot day, 29 at 7:30. We arrived early (4:00), and formalities were completed around 6:00.
Many of the staff are Indian and this is the ship's only visit to the country this year. Many are so excited at finally seeing their families and friends. I told Sheikh to forget about my cabin this morning. Apparently, his wife and son will be boarding today until Dubai.
My excursion today was to Elephanta Caves. This involved picking up a ferry by the Gateway to India for the hour long trip to the island. P&O provided the lifejackets, as they didn't trust the local ones! Just as we arrived at the drop off point, there was a family of five on the pavement opposite. Dad was busy bathing the kids, one little girl was covered from head to toe in soap suds.
After disembarking the ferry, we caught a little train for the 400 or so yards along the pier. Then it was a long, uphill trek through a narrow lane lined with stalls selling souvenirs, to the caves. These are actually carved out of the rock and are a Hindu temple. The carvings are something else. Many are damaged, apparently a couple of centuries ago, by the Portuguese, who used them for target practice.
Linda is still not well and the doctor did think about taking her off and sending her to hospital, but she's still on board. They've found some more World Circumnavigation t shirts, so I've bought one. It still has Bora Bora on it and Nawiliwili is still spelt Nawillwill, but hey ho.
Clocks back another 1/2 hour tonight to GMT +4. The reason India is 1/2 hour different is because the country actually straddles two time zones, but it actually has the eastern part 1/2 hour later than it should be and vice versa for the western part, thus keeping them all in the same time zone.
