Today we headed to the floating markets just outside siem reap in Tonle Sap Lake. The lake is over 12,000 kms wide in high rain season therefore all the houses along the banks are built very very high on stilts, or are designed to float on the lake. The lake was so large it continued well out to the horizon you couldn't see land on either side. The water flows from the Mekong River heading from China down through Laos and Cambodia into Vietnam where it enters the sea; however the river comes to a cross point in Cambodia and changes part of its flow back north into Cambodia and creates the lake. There are boats scattered along each side of the river which are floating houses. They move inland with the high tide closer to the mountains in rainy season. Some of the houses had pool tables, dogs and cats, and there was an entire school and library buildings floating up the river. The souvenier shop we got off at along the river had fresh water crocs in a cage for the locals to check out.. yah... to be honest, i was more impressed with the fresh coconuts we were drinkin! he he!
After that we headed to a local orphanage to hang out with the children. Alot of their parents were killed from landmines or did not have the money to feed them. They were so cute i sorta wanted to take one in my suitcase!! j/k
Tonight we are heading to our tour guides home to see where his family lives. He happens to be from Siem Reap so we'll check out his digs then go out for a night on the town.
Tomorrow a day of driving, then homestay- no electricity, no bathroom or shower- Fabulous!!!
