Welcome to Zimbabwe!
Now we are getting into the real Africa... We have a 3 day break here at Vic Falls. The border crossing was surprisingly easy. The weather is hot, about 30 degrees, but it is their winter! The Falls are really big at the moment, as they have had high rainfall up north, and are said to be spectacular. I have not been to see them yet but I am going this afternoon and on Monday I am doing the 'Flight of Angels'- micro-lighting over the Falls. Victoria Falls town itself is fairly small but there is big parties here when all the overland trucks come as the tours on similar routes end up at the same places when we are staying more than one night. It's good as we are getting to know people from other trucks and keep seeing them along the way. 6 of our group have now left at we have picked up 6 newbies.
We arrived here on Friday and spent the afternoon looking around the shops are markets. There is lovely stone work here but oh my... you REALLY great hassled! (Dad- you would hate it). It was definitely an experience! The currency here- Zimbabwean dollars is worth nothing, so US dollars and S.African rands are used. Of course all the tourists want to buy the Zimbabwean notes- ten trillion dollars etc, and these are easily brought on the street usually 2 or 3 notes for 1 USD.
Yesterday I did a walk with lions, very enjoyable and fantastic to see the lions up close. The African Lion is close to becoming an endangered species and the walk with lions is set up through a charity which breed and rear lions in captivity and then they are released into certain safe areas of Africa to help increase the population. We saw one of the lions chasing a warthog which was amusing! (no, it didn't catch it)... In the afternoon I went on an elephant ride, it was excellent! Our elephant was called Miss. Elle, and she had a baby elephant called Lulu. The baby walked all the way with us not leaving it's Mum's side and occasionally suckling from Mum as we went! Very cute.... :-)
I am having a brilliant time. Africa is an amazing place, I'm so happy that I've been able to see all the amazing things so far.......
Tomorrow we are heading to Zambia.
