On the 27th of February the long-awaited day finally arrived. At the same time when we were making our way to the Havanna airport, Michelle's mom was already well on her way to meet us in Cancun, Mexico. We met at the airport and the plan was to relax the next day in Cancun after Maria's long trip. We went to Isla Mujeres to catch some sun and Michelle got a bit sick, so we had to spend an extra day in the not-so-in teresting Cancun. But on the next day she was fine and we started to head down south from Cancun. Our first stop was in Tulum where we spent two nights. Maria finally got to see some Mayan ruins and we got to relax on the most beautiful beach we've ever seen and do some snorkeling.
Tulum's beach was pretty much a paradise for us, but after leaving Tulum we soon learned that there is even a better place for us all.
Our trip to Caye Caulker in Belize was a funny one, because in the morning when left Tulum, Mexico we were planning to go to a place called Dangriga in Belize. Our plan was to take a bus to the Mexican border town of Chetumal, from where we could catch a bus to Belize City where we would be before sunset. However, we met an American girl in the bus who had visited Belize five times, and contrary to what we usually do, we decided to take some precautions and avoid staying in Belize City for the night after she warned us about the city. During the next hour our plan changed something like five times. First we thought to stay in the Belizean border town Corozal for the night and continue our way to Dangriga in the morning. The American girl and the two Germans we also met on the bus were going to catch a ferry from Corozal to Ambergris Caye, and from there to Caye Caulker, but after they heard that they are not going to make it to the ferry on time, they decided to bus all the way to Belize City and take another boat to Caye Caulker. Earlier we had planned to go to Caye Caulker too, but as the ferry tickets from Corozal were so expensive, we decided to drop it from our itinerary. But as we now learned that the ferry from Belize City would be cheaper and we now had some travel company, we decided to give the famous Caye Caulker a shot and we also changed our tickets to go to the biggest city in Belize. In Belize City, we were in a real hurry to make it to the last ferry of the day, but luckily we caught a big taxi that could fit us all and we were just in time to make the trip to the Caye while watching a beautiful sunset.
We arrived in Caye Caulker and found a really nice place to stay. In the evening we went to a reggae party, which Maria absolutely loved. Today we have learned that coming here was the right thing to do as it's pretty much a perfect place to be. Right now we don't know how long we're staying, but we certainly know we're not in a hurry to get out. The place's motto is "Go slow with the island flow" and that's our plan for the next couple of days.
