We rode out of Nuts n chocs and pretty soon encountered a huge change in that the desert sands made way for amazing wetlands, swamps, fishermen and greenery! the border into senegal was pretty full on and took nearly 6hrs at the supposedly easier crossing at Diama - compared to rosso. i took charge of talking the talk and managed to avoid / seriously minimise the bribes we had to py. i even got some cred from a police control official for not giving into his bluff and carry on/threats. after wards outside he came up to me, now best friends, and actually shook my hand and patted me on the back saying well done and that i was a good man! Our biggest prob though was at duane - customs- coming into senegal. We had to eventually get permission from the chief to enter and then we had to pay and only got issued with 72 hours for our bikes to be in the country. told not to attempt entering any cities or towns and head straight for gambia. thankfully tho yesterday we extended our pass in dakar and got an additional 8 days - for a fee! the irony however was not lost on me when after pissing off the offical at the border with our insistance of not paying bribes, and getting into a standoff i let him cool off for some time. on my return i took a different angle and started making friends with him. he let slip how interesting senegal is, how friendly the ppl are and that we should spend at least month here! he however being the one standing in the way of this! i managed not to burst into laughter!
the ppl here truly are exceptionally friendly and hospitable and ill try to write about some examples in my next post, hopefully not on a damn french keyboard!
