After the last update in Dahkla i unexpectadly saw loads and loads of kitesurfers! Had a rest day there which actually turned out to be pretty full on. Did some repair to the bike and after meeting an expat couple who made the 4 of us more than welcome at their place and we joined them and some others to a huge bag of muscles theyd collected earlier in the day from the other side of the penninsula. Great feed.
We rode out of Dahkla and towards the Mauritanian border. We camped off the road about 80km from the border but not far from the road due to land mines. Bloody hot day and about 3 hours to get across the border. welcomed to mauritania by a no-mans-land full of car salesmen, scrap metal yards and a rough track for a few kms.
We have just arrived in Nuts n Chocolates after a week or so getting here. Rode the long way here. Headed straight east from Nouadibou along a train line/border with western sahara. All off road, mostly sand and very challenging, much of it also was cross country with no tracks at all. At the beginning we were all unsure if it was a good idea but it turned into a 3 day mission full of fun and excitement. Tim had one good high speed stack but was unscathed and his bike loved it. I got some video which i have uploaded so check it out. We carried an extra 10l of fuel each and water turned out to be obtainable at small towns along the way that were serviced by the train line. Massive trains lurched along this line, apparently the longest in the world. Saw what happens too when a train has problems/derails, its tipped off the tracks and left behind! On the way here to the city we had some interesting tracks that were very rocky where i stacked and smashed the s*** out of the fairings on my bike, and my legs.
Since this time in the desert and heading south a few things have changed. Its become hot, real hot. The middle part of the day is almost unbearable to be outside or even riding in. Sleeping in the open is the norm, as is Cuzzies - police/soldiers - packing AK47s. The driving in the towns and cities would at best be described as 'loose'. I love it though where anything goes, even driving on the wrong side of the road, although dont worry mum i keep this to a minimum. Check out the photos which will come soon and the video which hopefully works...
