San Francisco was over. We continued our migration south. After hearing many good things, we stopped over for a night in Santa Barbara. This town was amazing. After a quick walk along the beach, stopping at the skate park for a quick scope of the local tallent, we headed back to our parking spot and got changed in preperation for a night out. It started with drinks at the Sandbar followed by a big night at The Savoy nightclub. The next morning would see us take a swim at the beach for the first time in months. Despite the cold weather it was extremely refreshing.
We then hot-footed it down to LA, arriving at cousin Charlie's house around midday, only to wake him after his big night on the town. St patties day... started with lunch at Joey's cafe with Charlie and some of his friends. Then back to his house where we rested up for a bit before heading to the Belmont (their local bar). This consisted of many pints of Guiness, some Irish Car Bombs and many chats. From there we made our way to Hemingways in Hollywood. To us this seemed like a rather swanky bar, but apparently not according to the locals. We drank and danced the night away before crashing for the night. A late rise the next day was followed by a quick visit to Sanata Monica Pier where the wind was outrageous. That night we took it easy, went out for dinnerand saw 21 Jump Street at the cinemas with Charlie and a couple of his friends.
The next day we said our goodbyes and headed inland... to Vegas. Stayed at Treasure Island where we got cheap last minute accomodation. A bit of gambling to kick off the evening, but when that went pear shaped we retired to the room for a few drinks, followed by yet another large night on the strip.
Of course we were struggling when we woke up, so movements were slow. Our plan was to get to the Grand Canyon and then make it to Albuqurque before night. A flat tire put us behind schedule and we ended up making it to the Canyon after dark. It turned out quite well as we stayed there the night only to wake up to an amazing sunrise over the breathtaking gorge. We then braced ourself for our longest drive yet, down to Austin. We made a point to make it to White Sands national park by sunset and were lucky to make it, with about a minute to spare. The sunset was amazing and i will be sure to upload some photos when i feel i have a lot of spare time. We were going strong, until 2:30 the next morning, after taking it in shifts and being woken by Leo explaining that we hadn't passed a gas station in 60 miles. On our last bar of petrol we were hopeful that we would make it to the next town. Unfortunately we came short about 10 miles. After about 20 hours of non-stop driving, out of gas, we called it a night. Retired to our luxurious bed in the back on the side of the highway. Awake at 9:00 we started our walk, attempting to hitch our way with our jerry can. About 2 miles later an extremely generous Texan by the name of Tom pulled over. Not only was he willing to give us a lift, but he had a full can of gas in his tray which he most kindly gave to us. Only space for one in the cab, i had to jump in the tray for the trip back to the car. We continued our drive and finally ended up here in Austin. Although we haven't seen much yet, we have found a hostel to stay at and are kicking back for a moment before checking it out. For the first time i am able to put on shorts, singlet and thongs... and wow it feels good!!!
