We arrived around 3pm and we are staying at the Admiral hotel overlooking the Harbour, in what used to be their docklands and naval base area. The hotel is a renovated old warehouse. We have a 6th floor suite overlooking several warships docked in front of us. At night the view is terrific with all the ships and Opera House light up.
We have time for a quick walk to try to get our bearings. We pass the royal palace with the changing of the guards. We have an early dinner at 'Koefoed'. It is a magnificent fairly new restaurant serving modern Danish cuisine.
On Easter Sunday we have mass at Sankt Ansgans Kirke a beautiful church with the Bishop celebrating the sung Latin Easter mass.
We then visit the Danish design museum and we realize how this country is very clever at design. After seeing the 'egg' and 'ant' chairs we are reminded why they are regarded as one of the best design countries in the world.
We then head off to 'Louisiana' reputed to be one of the best contemporary art museums in the world. It is an interesting trip by train into the country.
What a museum! It is set in magnificent gardens on the sea. There are two major shows on, 'Andre Gursky', the famous contemporary photographer, and 'Women of the Avant Garde'. They also have world class art from their own collection from various periods. The garden setting is full of world renowned sculpture, such as Henry Moore, and Alexander Calder, with beautiful pieces from Giacometti inside.
On the way home back in Copenhagen we stop for a steak dinner at a simple inexpensive restaurant, 'Hereford'. It was really good.
Easter Monday most things are shut, the city is quiet and it's 3 degrees and raining.
We take a boat canal and Harbour tour. We were able to see most of the important buildings of the city, and Hans Christian Anderson's little mermaid sculpture.
We are lucky (because it is so cold and wet), to have arranged, through Sima, an artist studio visit. His name is Tal R. He is a young up and coming artist doing innovative work including painting, drawing and sculpture. His assistant Sophia explained his work to us, and showed us his current work.
Princess Mary is in town we think she and Fredrick paid a visit to one of the warships in front of us. However, we did not get an invite to the royal palace.
Our opinion of Copenhagen is: the people are very friendly and speak perfect English. Dealing with the currency is odd ( not in EU currency so Danish kroner). There is a huge amount of bicycles which many of the people use to go to work etc. There is a great sense of discipline and design. Our first impression is that it looks a bit shabby in places ie train stations. However, after time you become impressed with the order and symmetry of the city overall.
Tomorrow we are off to Oslo Norway it's meant to be 3 degrees so we are getting colder now.
