Rose and Micha World Exploration Tour 2008 - 2009
First month recap
Hi all,
We are in Singapore and tonight we will fly on to Ko Samui (a Thai island). I have uploaded quite a few more pics from the first month and would like to reflect of what has happened so far and give you some interesting/funny anecdotes.
Here are the places we have visited so far:
- India - only spent a few days in Delhi which was a full on (in your face) experience. Quite interesting but quite a culture shock as well. Keywords from our short experience: dirty (smog and dust), poverty and begging, great vegetarian food, touts, locals loving Rose's plats.
- Nepal - great place, a recommendation for the non-faint harted. Makes you realize how much we are spoiled when there is hardly any hot water, houses without any isolation, interesting toilets (see picture in the 1st month leftovers book), people are incredibly friendly and nice. The Himalaya trek took it to the extreme and makes you realize that survival skills will display when needed. It was always a surprise what the dishes you order will look like when served (Rose really loved the apple crumble: NOT). Also interesting food on the menu such as 'child beer', 'fired egg' and stumbled or scumbled eggs. All trekking guides are flirts and some of them might need to be cautious with their preference for young girls up in the mountains. On occasion it can be dangerous to visit the loo as you might go head first with your head into that hole in the ground as they can be very slippery (and I didn't bring my Dutch ice-skates) and by default they are dirty and smelly. The mountains are amazing and we have been quite lucky with the weather! Traffic is another amazing experience where everyone is honking their horns constantly, rules do not apply and yet hardly any accidents occur (except for our touring bus).
- Singapore - a south east Asian business hub with little own identity: too much shops, MacDonalds, Burger Kings, Starbucks and the alike. Feels like the US with loads of Oriental people. It is impossible to get some local food (does it exist?) and we are happy to leave it behind us after just 3 days. Interesting experience but not the thing we are looking for on this trip!
Not sure about the internet facilities on the Thai islands so there might be some radio silence for a while.
Blog you later and hope you'll enjoy the new leftover pics and this little summary!
