Apie from Lithuania! Whew! Am I worn out! I didn't think it was possible to do so much in one day. I landed in Lithuania at 7:00 this morning and met up with my old friend Kate. After stopping for breakfast at a cute restaraunt called Kibininė(they served meat stuffed pastries called kibinai), we went up to the Museum of Genocide Victims. It was the most captivatingly horrible place that I've ever been to. It was terrible to see the KGB prison and to learn about the Soviet Union's persecution of Lithuanians! The execution chamber positively broke my cheart. we saw the little momentos of people killed there-buttons, shoes and such-and Kate almost cried. After saying goodbye to Kate, I decided to try something a little more light hearted so I went to the Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania. I have to admit that this one was a little boring. I mean, of course it was interesting to see the progression of money throughout the ages, but it was a museum of banking for pete's sake! It wasn't exactly the height of adventure. After a little time there, I went for lunch at a canary yellow house with real, homemade Lithuanian food. It was so great! I had something called Borscai which is the Lithuanian version of Borsht (or beet soup). Then, I ate some Cepelinai, which is the national Lithuanian food. It's basically a serving of potato dumplings filled with meat and onions. For dessert(my favorite part of any meal) I had some zagarelai. That's like a twisted pastry with powdered sugar on it. My meal was amazing! I didn't plan it, but when I got there I realized that my trip coincided with a folk festival called the Song and Dance celebration, and, get this, it only happens every four years! What are the odds! Naturally, that is where I spent the rest of my visit. The festival was easily the best part of my visit. It is held in Vingis Park on a huge stage. There is a performance during which large kites and banners were held in the air and swung around. The beautiful, happy music and breathtakingly colorful costumes made this a truly unforgetable experience. So, that was my day in Lithuania. I'm staying in the Shakespeare Hotel and I ordered room service for dinner. I'll take off for France in the morning and I can't wait! Lithuania down, watch out Europe, here I come
