This is needle lace that started in Italy. This style does not need a lot of equipment. It takes time though. Typically 1cm per hour. This meant that rich people tended to do or have this type of lace.
The rich people during the 16 th century used to wear ruffs made from lace which were high round the neck and were very uncomfortable. This led to a trend that collars came down over the shoulders. A bit like the three musketeers.
Lace in French means winding as in roads or lanes.
As men started to wear long wigs during Louis 14th time and this meant the collars now got dirty quickly. This led to lace now being worn on sleeves and on legs.
Women wore bonnets during the 18th century. It was considered that the longer the bonnet lace was the more noble you were.
