MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
What a beautiful sunrise this morning across the lake in Foss State Park. Slept like babies last night thanks to Harvey's A/ C and the peace and quiet of the park. One of our neighbours and his dog Matthew were also up to enjoy the sunrise and watch the fishermen reel in the catfish. He was from Amarillo and heading East to His old home town in Missouri. Although he'd lived in Texas for over 50 yrs he still called Missouri home. He and his wife had 3 RV's over time and loved the freedom of travel that they provided. As we head off this morning and leave our fellow campers to the serenity of the lake Liz asks the question ' So what are we most looking forward to today?' And in unison the answer is "Tonight!" We do enjoy the few hours at night when we stop traveling, have a drink, some dinner and a slide show of the days events before bed. We have been advised along the way that we must stop at the Route 66 museum in Clinton so that's where we head first up. It's a very well set out exhibit. It costs $5 each to get in and the displays are set up by the decades starting at the 20's and ending at the 70's. Its such a trip back in time, its hard to believe but fortunate that people have collected or kept so much of these items. We spend easy an hour there. Next town is Elk City this is where we find the Country Dove Tea Rooms and where we will have morning tea. There is no doubt that we are in the Bible Belt and the tea rooms has a mix of gifts and knick knacks and bibles and inspirational religious based material. Right at this time, the owners have gone to a funeral so they have called in some of their friends to run the shop and tea rooms. It's quite busy and the ladies are a little flustered as they greet us at the door to say they don't know how to charge a credit card so we would have to use cash or cheque if we wanted to stay. We have cash so we proceed to order, baked cheesecake, French silk pie, heart shaped muffins with honey butter, coke, coffee and hot spiced apple berry tea. Upstairs in the bathroom ( we all always visit the bathrooms) , the bath is filled with artificial flowers and there is a bottle of Glamour Do on the window shelf. If you want to know more about Glamour Do, you will have to come visit and use the loo. When I went up and didn't come back straight away, they thought I had been lost in the realm of religion at the Country Dove! We make some purchases and chat with the owner who has returned from the funeral so now everyone can relax a little. As we were ready to leave, we couldn't find Milton. A young lady in the shop asked if we were looking for an older gentleman because there was one sitting in the rocking chair outside. Ouch! We don't think of ourselves as old but I guess to 20 year olds, we are. Just down the road is the Old Town Museum Complex. The ' town' includes an Opera House, Chapel, doctors office, rail road station and much more. It's an interesting walk around. On we go to Erick. Thought we would visit the Roger Miller museum so to get us in the mood we find ' king of the road' , Chug-a-Lug, Do-Wack-a-Do. And crank them up ...Dang! The museum is closed on Mondays! It's lunch time, looking around, there's not much in Erick, its been left a bit of a ghost town since the interstate went through but we see a bakery and coffee shop so we'll give it a go. Jewel in the crown Liz described it as compared to the rest of the town, its lovely and clean inside and the food is good. We've been having mostly salads and sandwiches or wraps. The boys have the occasional burger but we are pretty restrained. Don't go back and read about the morning teas however! Back on the road, Milton is amazed at the number of semi's that are passing us on the highways. The speed limit is 70mph, we are sitting on 60 mph the semi' are passing us and they are supposed to be doing 55mph. Where are the state troopers? We are keeping a bit of a list of wildlife we have, dead or alive. So far: Racoons, Eagles, Bison, Deer, skunks, squirrels, rabbit, Geese, gnats, scorpion, armadillo, chiggers. No kangaroos or koalas. A few miles after Erick, we cross the border out of Oklahoma and into Texas. A lot of farming country this side of the border and the biggest centre pivots we have ever seen. Most of these little towns like McLean , Allenreed and Groom are merely rundown ghost towns since the highway bypassed them. On the outskirts of Amarillo we stop at the information centre to arm ourselves with Texas info. We are heading south out of the city tonight to Palo Duro Canyon State Park. It's the Texas Grand Canyon or at least the 2nd largest Canyon in the USA to the Grand Canyon. The boys have decided on steak tonight seeing as we are in Texas and all. Of course we have to make stop at Walmart to buy the steaks and heat beads for the Barbecue. On our way now to the Canyon. We stop at the Ranger station to check in and get our campsite for the night. It's an 8 mile drive down to our campsite through the canyon. It's a much milder night tonight and there is a lovely breeze blowing through Harvey's windows. Once again it is going to be a quiet night as we don't have too many other campers here. Glenn cooked the steak outside but we ate inside to avoid being eaten alive by bugs. I am really hoping to see some wildlife, maybe in the morning when we go for a walk. Goodnight Harvey xx

Deb Who's the cute young guy in the red convertible?
Kathy Love the picnic spot!
Deb Wow! A great spot to soak up the atmosphere! Xx
Deb Forgot to ask ... Was sweet Maree waiting for you? :-)
Meredith Hammond It was a beautiful spot to stay for the night. The state parks are so cheap and well maintained. Power and water all supplied. We had that song cranked up on the radio coming into town Deb but she must have got sick of waiting!
