MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
Early start planned this morning. Turned out to be earlier than expected. Milton was getting an update of the final footy scores from home. ( congratulations to Brad&wilson and his West team. See you next week in the GF) Liz asked for the time and he said 5pm. No point getting up to go to the toilet now, we will be up in an hour and a half although that seemed a very quick night. Well yes it was 5pm back home and only 2am here! Oops! So Liz battled on until it became impossible at which time we were awake also so our 6.30 start changed to 5.45. Our intention was to be on the road by 7.30am, we are going to Las Vegas today but via Route 66 to Kingman and then we are heading to see the Hoover Dam. Breakfast is at Williams in a diner called Pine Country Diner. It has the most amazing pies but its breakfast time so the pies are a no go. Something we regret later in the day. It's a busy diner but the service us quick and the food is good. Fueled up we hit the road. At 11.26am, we are done doin Route 66 for now. We are travelling at 75 mph to get to a little town in the middle of nowhere that at high noon every Saturday they have a gunfight .The ghost town that never died, but probably should have, goes by the name of Chloride, yes Chloride. As we drive into town we are greeted by Digger Dave who welcomes us from the front porch of the saloon. Come on in he says. So we do, mainly to visit the rest rooms and to check the place out. OMG! We have it the time warp again. Down the street is the 'ghost town' and here we find a creepy guy who runs the shop and wants to sell us postcards. This really is an extraordinary place. This ghost town is a bunch of old buildings and this is where the gunfight will take pace. Wrong! The gunfight is a no go as the gunfighters have not shown up and the reserves are away . What!!!! We got up at 6am, sacrificed time in beautiful Williams, drove legally like the clappers and all for nothing. Gutted!!!! Only one thing we can do and that's to go to Digger Dave's and have a drink. I climb up into the saddle and we sit up at the bar and the boys have a beer and I have a berry flavored something in a bottle and Liz settles for nothing. Digger Dave's other half tells us that they have been open for just one year, but when they took over the place 2 years ago it was a mess and they have spent a lot of time and money fixing it up. There is a lot of stuff in this bar. As we are about to leave, the live music begins. There is just 6 of us in the bar at the time and leaving will mean 3/4 of the audience have left after just one song. Hope John the singer didn't take it personally but he was pretty ordinary. We make our escape while we can and we leave Chloride behind in our dust. Onto the Hoover Dam. We are not the only people visiting here on this hot and sunny Saturday. The new bridge across the dam is an engineering marvel. We cross the dam park Harvey and walk to a couple of look outs to see the dam and the structures that hold back the mighty Colorado River. Boy it's hot! Our original plan was that we would stay at Boulder Beach on the shores of Lake Mead. The Lake made by the damming of the river. Our new better plan is that we are going to Las Vegas and have 4 nights there instead of 3. Out of curiosity we drive down to the Marina to see what we might be missing. There are 1000's of boats moored at the Marina and there is a cafe and bar so why not stop for a drink and something to eat. What started as ' let's have a coffee' turned into a beer and cocktails and a bite to eat. Driving past the RV Park we were originally going to stay in assured us that we had Adelaide a good choice to head for Las Vegas. The park on the lake turned out to be the park 1 mile across dusty terrain to the lake and it was extremely hot and there was little shade. Good decision! Vegas here we come. It's only about 4.30pm as we pull up at the Oasis RV Park and WOW! It's an Oasis alright. Beautiful tree lined streets and shaded sites. We will spend one night in a ' normal' site and then we are moving to a more shady site with grass and right next to the pool. This is not your regular RV Park and its no more expensive than most of the places we have stayed. Straight to the pool. It's so refreshing. The sun is still up so a bit of a wind down is in order. We are about 6 miles from the strip but we can see the pretty lights. It's quiet considering there are 700 sites. Next door which is actually a good 15 minute walk across 2 major intersections is where we go or dinner. It's the Silverton Casino complex and it looked so close! Las Vegas is not a walking city. We have lovely dinner in the steak restaurant before walking back to Harvey. We have put down roots now for 4 nights and it feels so good. Goodnight Harvey have a good rest... You deserve it. Xxx
