MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
It's our last full day in Copenhagen before the cruise. We have a list of things we want to see and do, but first it's a trip to the laundry to drop off some washing which we will pickup at 5.30. The Rundetaarn (Round Tower) was built by Christian 1V between 1637 and 1642. To get to the top of the tower we walk via the spiral walk which is 209 metres long and spirals 7 1/2 times around its hollow core. I'd much rather walk up this spiral walk than steps! Apparently they once had a penny farthing race in the tower! At the top the view is magnificent and although its a little overcast today you can still see a LNG way. On the way down we stop at the Library Hall which once housed the university's book collection but the library closed in 1861 because the collection grew too big. Today there was an interesting exhibition of art in the space. Once back at street level, it's coffee time! We now cross town to Christianshavn to climb to the top of the Our Saviors Church tower. Now this one is all steps and steep! Just when it felt like we were getting to the too, we step out onto the platform to find there is another 140 spiral stairs to go. The view is so worth the climb. The next place on our list today is Christiansborg Castle. The stables are open to viewing from 1.30 pm but to my great disappointment, the 14 horses had been taken out to pasture for the summer. The stables are magnificent and these are very lucky horses! There is also a display of carriages from one of the very first carriages used by the royal family to the ones they still use today including the carriage that Prince Frederick and Princess Mary rode in on their wedding day. It was a very interesting visit but I was still pretty peeved about the horses! We join a guided tour of the palace which is excellent. This palace is not lived in but is where the Prime Minister has his offices and where the Queen receives guests and hosts dinners and parties. It's beer o'clock and time to collect the washing. This evening we go to the Famous Tivoli Gardens. Oops, we have a bit of a false start. we walk out the doors of the hotel all freshly bathed and clean clothes and then it happened, a rather large message was sent from a passing bird onto Glenn's freshly laundered shirt. i could not contain myself but unfortunately he didn't see the funny side! It was very funny though! Ok take two - we are off to the Tivoli It is far more than I expected. There are amazing amusement park rides, many restaurants and beautiful gardens and lawns. We were not the only people there on a Tuesday night! Just to top the day off, we go for a ride on the Roller Coaster. Haven't done that in a while. It was awesome! A great day finished off with a bottle of not so great wine in our hotel room. By the way, on our way back at 10.30, it was still light and the lights were only just starting to come on. As I am finishing this blog it is now 11.30pm and it is finally dark!!! Tomorrow our cruise begins!
