What an awesome weekend!
Crashed around on Fraser Island in a 4WD full of other travellers for three full days. There were 8 of us altogether; Matt came up from Surfer's to meet us again and we were put in a vehicle with 3 French guys named Mohammed, Remy and Laurent, a Manchester lass called Michelle and another English guy called Matt. They were a barrel of laughs and we all had a really good time. We were on a self drive deal, which was a little hair-raising at times...especially when Mohammed was behind the wheel! The shovel came in handy on several occassions. (Not for keeping Mohammed in check with; but for digging our beloved 4x4 out of the sand). The catchphrase of the weekend became 'Sorry, guys...' (in a French accent), after Mohammed used it about four times on the first day.
Fraser is a truly beautiful place, and although the weather wasn't quite as perfect as it could have been, the island still looked wonderful. We saw the stunning Lake Wabby; incredibly green and surrounded by enormous sand dunes which climb very steeply and roll on for miles and miles. Matt and I had a rolling race down the biggest one. We realised afterwards that we should have done so before eating lunch. We also visited Lake Mackenzie and Lake Birrabeen, both crystal clear and turquoise against whiter-than-white sands. Despite the weather on day 2, we had the Champagne Pools all to ourselves and had a great time splashing around amongst the enormous waves crashing over the rocks in absolutely torrential rain. There didn't seem to be any other tourists who fancied it. Strange, that. We also floated down Eli Creek in the rain and Matt, once again, won the race to get there first. It was all very tropical.
When we had finished bouncing around for the day we spent the evenings cooking, eating and drinking well into the night around the camp. We even saw a couple of dingoes. The evenings were really chilled out, especially after Laurent produced his Shisha pipe. Although this may look like a giant bong, fear not; it is infact a pipe used in Northern Africa for smoking flavoured tobacco. Very relaxing and sociable.
Even though there was a severe lack of showering for 3 days, I really didn't want to leave!
