Beautiful
Tasmania is so beautiful. This island is amazing. I've seen penguins in the wild here! I never thought I would be able to do that. We went to a place along the beach called the rookery where penguins go to borough for the night. They were waddling up from the beach into their homes for night. It was quite a sight to see. I also saw wombats, which look like little furry hotdog looking animals with legs. I saw a mama wallabee (looks like a small kangaroo) with a baby in her pouch. It was so cool. I got to do some hiking and saw some beautiful spots on the 5 day tour that I just completed last night. I met some cool people my age from Switzerland, England, and Montana. One night at a hostel we all were trying to play Trivial Pursuit, Australian version. It was quite difficult for foreigners to answer questions about Australian politics and the like. On the last day of the tour we visited a temperate rain forest. This type of rain forest only exists in cool temperatures and apparently Tasmania's latitude is thought to be where pangea (when all the continents were massed together millions of years ago) occurred. These cool temperate rain forests are thought to be the kind of terrain that existed when all the continents were together. Pretty cool, eh?
I've been really amazed at the kindness of people here. The people on the farms just open up their homes and lives to strangers, hoping to learn more about other cultures. The fish farmer told me that he views the world as if everyone in humankind is in one big house and everyone just looks out different windows. I'm grateful to enjoy this environment of intermingling nationalities- Swiss, German, Norwegian, English, Austrian, Malaysian, French, etc. This country is ideal for the English speaker wanting to make friends from all around the world. I've never experienced such a place like this where people are so welcoming and interested in learning more about me.
