I'm in a place called Surfers Paradise at the moment. It's very touristy and there are lots of chain restaurants and stores here like your typical McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and Baskin Robbins. It's kinda a cross between Vegas and Myrtle Beach. It is really hot now and I can only get relief from the heat by swimming in the ocean or laying really still. Luckily I can still swim in the ocean because as I head further up the coast I won't be able to swim due to the crocs! Crikey! Hehe. Anyway, I have been to Byron Bay before Surfers and I liked it better there because it was smaller and it was more laid back. Like many places on the coast you see many people going around just barefoot with their swimmers (bathing suit to you all) and thongs (they call flip flops thongs here...funny) on. I spent Australia Day in Byron and I attended a free bbq near the beach and watched some aboriginals performing some of their native dances. I also took a free didgeridoo lesson. A didgeridoo is an aborginal musical instrument that looks like a hollowed out branch with wax on the end for blowing. The lesson was taught by an aboriginal who told us to feel the energy of the instrument as we played it. The instructor has played this instrument for 15 years, so to hear him was quite amazing! I tried playing it but it didn't really sound that melodic but it was fun to try! I also biked to the lighthouse in Byron Bay, which is the most easterly point in Australia, so I was closest to the US when I was there. Tomorrow I head to Australia's third largest city, Brisbane. I'll spend a few days there and then head up the coast to another beachside town called Noosa where Christian and I will take a 2 day canoe trip. Hope everyone is doing well. Take care.
