Hi everyone!
As you probably noticed from my location setting, I am not off to South America just yet.
I'm not leaving before March 2, 2009 but I thought it might be a good idea to start my blog early - not sure how frequently I will be able to access the internet on the road.
I am going on an excursion with my university (Ruhr-Universität Bochum, geography department) for 3 weeks and we will be covering the northern part of Chile as well as parts of Bolivia. I don't have a detailed itinerary yet, but I will post our stops along the way as soon as I know more.
I am flying into Chile early with Chantal, a friend of mine and we will travel the Lakes region of Chile. We would love to go to Patagonia but we don't have that much time, so it looks like we won't be seeing any glaciers. We are going there with a "backpacker bus" company called "Pachamama by bus" which offers a "hop on-hop off" service.
After our excursion finishes in La Paz, Bolivia, we will travel to Cusco in Peru (by bus...somehow...) and plan to visit Machu Picchu as well as the Sacred Valley of the Incas from there. We'll then fly to Lima and after spending a day there, we'll go back home.
I am pretty excited about the trip already and a bit worried, too. I am working on my Spanish but so far I only know the words for "hi" on different times during the day and I can introduce myself. I have gotten all the important travel vaccinations there are (yellow fever, hepatitis, typhoid, rabies) and bought most of the stuff for the trip. It is going to be my first time in a country completely different from what I am used to (I've traveled to various European countries, Australia and the US so far; but I think these are all pretty similar regarding the standard of living)
Bye for now :)
