Made it safely to dubai....
Business class was fab! It made the 11 hour flight go quickly.
Wish john could have been there too. He is now catching up on some sleep before we head out to have a look around town.
My first impression is that everything is BIG. The airport is gargantuan, clean and well signposted. Also, everything we have seen so far is new. The photo is of lady taxi drivers, dressed in pink, in pink taxis!
Thankfully we were able to check into the hotel (premier inn) early for a surcharge. Nice little hotel with a penchant for purple.
First touristy stop for the day was the Dubai museum, set in an old fort. This led to a wander around the old quarter and a stroll along the creek. Great big wooden cargo boats chugging up and down. Highlight of my day: taxi boat across the creek. From the well worn water taxi it was onto the ultra smooth and modern metro, where we made our way to Dubai mall with it's giant aquarium with glass 6 inches thick. The building next door must be the tallest in the world- the most beautiful shiny thing- Burj Dubai. Huge mall- starving by this stage, we had Iranian fast food at pars.
Metro then taxi to the jumeirah palm island- a created city from dredging!
We went to the hotel complex at the end- Atlantis on the Palm. We weaseled our way in to the foyer- amazing space with big glass sculpture and another aquarium- 3 stories high and foot thick glass. John had heard that they had a whale shark but we did't see it. They had everything else though! All set in a 'lost island of Atlantis' type setting. It really looked amazing.
Taxi back to metro, then a quick stop into mall of the emirates. This mall has a snowfield! It looked like they have freezer coils that freeze water they spraymist on. It even had a ski lift!
I 'misplaced' my sunnies the day before we left- I thought this would be a good spot to grab a replacement pair, but they are all so damned expensive (at least $150). Not a good look for the likes of me who looses them every other day!
End of the day we enjoyed a quiet G&T. A great day in Dubai.
