Hiya loves!!! (you don´t have to read all of this, just pretend you have...)
Welcome to Peru, and our first blog entry.........But first, Brazil!
Sair was ill at the airport, she´s caught some variety of whooping cough and sounds like a rather gammy girl... but better than rabies eh?!
Got to Rio where we were greeted by a lovely brazilian man who took us for a ride, was instantly amazed by the sights of Copacabana and Christ etc... and how many vw campervans there were! boiling hot and glorious sun too. Arrived at the hostel, shocked by the set of steps and steep hill that awaited us and the first thoughts of óhh shiiiit, we´ve gota carry our bags´ set in. (Although somehow Ellens managed to get away without doing a lot of that, jammy get!!! It must be the blonde hair...)
Rio Backpackers or ´hio backpackaaa´as its known, was small and pretty basic (first impressions were not great). BUT the lovely ladies who worked there and the relaxed atmosphere made it bangin!!!! We ditched our s*** and hit the Copa-Copacabanaaaaa. Sair had tan lines within literally ten minutes.... ellen´s yet to get any. Copacabana was ace, so busy and so many ´boooootiful´people with their asses out. Big waves too. We had a nice round of coconut milk and to our shock it got dark at 6pm. Amidst all our excitement we realised we didn´t know where we lived (in Rio that is). Like true nobheads we wandered around in the dark streets searching for something, not quite sure what. (whatever it was we didn´t find it....) After asking numerous taxi drivers who didnt know what the f*** we were on about, we hatched a cunning plan.
We walked into ´othon palace´, how we got passed the doormen i do not know! Anyway they rang every brazilian they knew, but noone knew hio backpackaaa. We didn´t want to admit defeat, so spent about a fiver on the internet to find the address. home and dry(well a bit sandy, but..)! Bed.
Day 2, Ipanema beach for a few hours. Made friends (you could call it that) with a strange man who kept hissing at us and climaxed with a ´she-she´ (he pissed through his beach chair...nice!). Spent most of the day sunning ourselves and trying not to get our beach stuff wet from the crashing waves. Ellen also being told by some random brazilian (who says he was a doctor) that she should wear factor 50 suncream, ha!
That evening, decided to get in on some Brazilian football action at Maracana (apparently the worlds biggest footy stadium?!). The atmosphere was absolutely electric, particularly because it was Romario´s chance to score his 1000th goal for Vasco (our team) as well as it being rich vs poor teams from Rio. Despite losing 2-0 to the poor folk and Romario not delivering the goods we had a fantastic time singing and ended the night pretty tipsy on 2 skols... each. That was also the day we saw all the monkeys on the telephone wires outside our hostel (see pics).
Went back to our room (which we had been blissfully taking up just the two of us) to find Jason and Yattie from Oz who loved to talk about how they´d been travelling for 7 years, which soon became their nickname.... ´7 yeeeears´!
Next day, more beach action at copacabana, lovely. Had some snacks from a local dodgy guy with a stand on a corner. Planned to do Christ, but it was too cloudy. Thought we´d have a nice relaxed evening chilling in the hostel... but this was not to be. Cue aussie nick, full of banter and catchphrases, he quickly became our 3rd amigo.
Tuesday 3rd, the three of us decided to go up corcovado to see christ and see if he could cure Sairs Whooping cough. The car journey was fun, loud favela music and standardly erratic brazilian driving. We were joined by the Sheffield Physios Rachael and Katie and continued our journey. Christ was f***in impressive to say the least, amazement came over us (in particular Ellen who got a bit over excited...), although whooping cough was not cured. Had an ace day, taking pics, skols with the best views ever and headed back down the hill after a good day with christ.
Back to the hostel for some Uno. 7 years gave advice that if Christ couldn´t cure Sair, then maybe a good few caparinhas would. So the 5 of us hit the beach sharpish. Night of Spag bol (made by sheffield lasses), caparinhas, english music and pool followed.
Beach nice and breezy next day. Decided to do Sugar Loaf for sunset. Pretty ace views, despite a bit of cloud. More skol for us and funny pics. Got on the wrong bus back to the hostel, with nick trying to convince us to get off at some point in the hour long journey(20 mins to get there...), which finally took us back to the loveheart supermarket we know and love.
Nick wanted us all to get drunk and in a bid to cure sairs whooping cough we decided on a big b****** bottle of vodka. Armed with chicken breast, potatoes, a zuchinni and the garlic clove sair was forced to steal we headed back to the hostel and let nick cook our tea. ´Get in!´ Got drunk and had a war with this manchild who wanted the music down after ten. So we went outside on the rooftop, unplugged the washing machine and smacked on the tunes and the manchild soon got tired of bothering us. Somehow ended up going out in Lapa, rio´s version of ´party time´ and met a sheep, brace face, a hanson look-a-like and some hot israeli guys. Was a cool night, ellen awoke on the upstairs sofa to the sound of breakfast being made, and made a hasty exit to the bed. leaving nick passed out.
That day however was not so cool, hungover and packing our stuff to travel down to Sao Paulo. The comfy bus was a nice suprise and provided a good haven for snoozing and good chat. Frango and the rain at the service station perked us up, ready for Sao Paulo though. Arriving at our Hotel we asked about 5 times to check we were at the right hotel, as it looked so nice. watched brazilian soap operas and went to bed.
Day 7, Took in Sao Paulo and all the ladies with the platform shoes on the metro. Hit the main avenue and MASP, an art museum, for a good cafe and a little culture. Re-packed our stuff after the coach station part of carrying. And somehow ellen managed to lose 4 kilo´s from her rucksack. ´get in!´
Day 8, all day travel. lima hotel pretty damn nice. got excited about free internet and emailed the world.
Today!!! - walked around the centre of Lima, was impressed with the cheapness and modern-ness of things here. Had a 3 course meal for 1 quid, and was accosted by a strange drunk peruvian man and little boy trying to sell us chewing gum. Headed back to meet gap people, ready to start our trip tommorrow. Went out for some chicken at Norkys. Had some strong pisco sours.
So far, bang on! having a great time.
The next two weeks will consist of amazon, altitude trekking and more fun.
well done if you read this far.
till the next time!
´see you f***in laytaaaaa´
