Bangkok
Hurrah - I have arrived in Bangkok! Eventually after 4 hours of delays at Sydney airport! I boarded the plane at 10pm Oz time and arrived in Bangkok at 4am Thai time! (9 hour flight) I think I am now only 7 hours ahead of the UK which is much better!
I did not sleep much on the plane as I was to over excited by the in-flight entertainment! For the first time since flying out of heathrow I had my own telly and the choice of 60+ films! I watched The Last King of Scotland, The Black Dahilia and Babel which are all incredibly good films... the food was s***e which is odd as I normally love plane food! They brought me spinach pasta at 2.30am! Yum thats just what I fancied for breakfast!! Plus I was not really hungry after my free Wagamamas!
Anyway I was relieved to see my bag as I had checked it in at New Zealand and never trust them to put it on the connecting plane! Only two more flights to go and I have managed not too lose my luggage.. an achievement in itself and one of my biggest concerns coming away! screw malaria or war torn countries as long as my bag comes round the carasol I am happy!
I said mygoodbyes to Tiz who I met in New Zealand and was on the same flight as me and went to find my airport transfer.... which thankfully was there...I was happy about this as I didn't fancy flagging a taxi down at 4.30am... the ride to the hotel reminded me of how I felt on the drive to my hotel in Nairobi on my first day away! Apprehensive to be in such a different country but excited at the same time. I had my first Thai culture shock when a boy who could not have been older than 6 or 7 was wandering between the traffic all by himself trying to sell stuff to the drivers at 4.30am! Makes you realise how lucky you are!
I also was treated to my first sighting of a Tuk Tuk, zipping through the little traffic at stupid speeds.... I can't wait to die on one! I mean try one!
The hotel I was at last night and tonight is pretty nice and according the the driver in a nice area. I could not sleep which was annoying as I had been up for a ridiculous amount of hours! It was a bit surreal having a room to myself... The last time I slept in a room on my own was 27th October in Nairobi! How odd! Although when I woke up it was nice not to have to battle for the shower. I checked out of my room at 12 Noon to check into a room I will be sharing with someone from the Intrepid tour...
I had a wonder round the streets near my hotel to get my bearings, there is cool clothes stores and people cooking all manner of food on the street....I am now off to find an ATM and buy some clothes a bit more suitable for the Asian climate than the ones I have!
I have a pre dep meeting at 6pm then hopefully dinner with some people from the tour.
I like Thailand already, although Bangkok smells and is over crowded.. it feels like real travelling again and I am looking forward to exploring the country.
