We arrived next in Hanoi, our flight was only around 1.5hrs from Bangkok so wasn't to bad really. Once we hit Hanoi's airport, which was soooo mad, lots of people wearing face scary masks we headed straight to the tourist information helpdesk to try and get a taxi to take us into the centre. We had already booked 1 nights accomdation in Hanoi just to get us settled in. The ride to the hotel was around 1 hour, had a couple of near hit and misses with bikes on the way, i think it must be a south east asia thing, they are everywhere, you have to put your own life in your hands and run flat out across the road, we have started to master this quite well now.
We made it there, hotel was nice enough for the money we paid, 19 dollars for the night and that was for both of us. I think Hanoi was abit of a shock for us, as it was the capital and sooo much more busier than bangkok. We had a wander around the riverside and hit a resturant for some tea, didnt really like the plane food, so wewere both starving by this point...
From this we carried on walking around, tried to take in a water pupett show, but all the tickets for that night had already gone :-(....We did however book a boat trip for the next day, the trip was a overnight stay and a cruise around Halong Bay. We headed off about 8am onto a tiny tiny minibus for a 4 hour jounery to Hanoi city to catch the boat...It was abit of a job for me and Claire lugging our suitcase's around the harbour side...LOL
We boarded the boat and we were given the very nice dish for dinner of rice, cabbage, sweet potato made into chips along with various other not to pleasent things. Once we all finished we were showed to our cabins, these were very nice indeed, glad we upgraded to the superior boat now..... However there was NOOOOO heating on the whole boat, not a good thing in the middle of the ocean, we just had to sleep in all our clothes..
Halong Bay is a lovely place, very peaceful (will upload pic's soon) we met lots of other traveller's, including a ozzie couple from Melbourne called Nathan and Cassie and a girl called Saskia from Amsterdam. Nathan and Cassie have given us their email address so we can look them up when we get to oz and they will give us a tour around.
We headed back for Hanoi after dinner to catch our overnight bus onto our next stop in Veitham, Hue. I was soooooo not looking forward to the 13hr bus journey. The buses basically have bunkbeds on for you tosleep, the roads here are rubbish so i knew it would be a bumpy ride..............Next stop Hue
