I got into Madrid late on my first night and somehow managed to get lost which is never fun with a backpack. After finally finding my hostel dinner was noodles at 11pm -Spanish time does have its benefits. The next few days in Madrid were spent relaxing in parks as I had been feeling sick since leaving Brussels.Yesterday I went on the free walking tour with 3 swedish girls and George from the hostel which took 5 hours but covered all the main sites of the city and even covered a bit of Spanish history which was handy considering I knew none of it prior to this.
Among other thing i saw and heard about:
• Royal Palace
• Teatro Real (The Royal Opera House)
• Monastery of the Descalzas Reales
• Moorish ruins
• Sol, the heart of Madrid
• Catedral de Almudena
• Church of San Ginés
• Spanish Inquisition
• World's oldest restaurant
• The origins of Tapas
• Spanish Civil War
• Spanish Empire
and that one of the symbols of Madrid is a bear eating berries from a Madrono tree.
Afterwards George and i found a small family run restuarant in some back street for an early dinner. We ordered and somehow ended up with 5 plates of food and 2 beers for 24 euros between us. It was crazy and we hardly finished any of it but so so goooood.
That evening we watched the sunset at the Debod temple, which is in a park that has a view over the city. Such a pretty spot that there were 6 couples there having their wedding photos taken. Moving on for a few beverages we had a few failed attempts of finding somewhere with a good atmosphere before stumbling upon a bar called Venta el Buscan in a street off Puerta del Sol with Spanish music and cheap Sangria. It was a fantastic day overall.
Today it was time to move on yet again, so off i went and caught the train towards the coast.
