We didn't spend any time looking around the area surrounding Barachois Pond Provincial Park area, but rather packed up quickly in the morning and continued on our way to Gros Morne National Park. We had decided to spend the next few days in Rocky Harbour as there was a campground there and it was relatively central for things to do in the park.
We arrived in Rocky Harbour around 1:30 or so and found the campground we had decided to check out. When we were pulling up to the campground, I was a little worried about what it would be like to camp there because it looked like just a big parking lot with some picnic tables and bonfire pits - not really the kind of campground I like to stay in! I like some trees, and some privacy between sites. But luckily for us, there was also a back section that was more my style of a campground with some really nice campsites and someone had cancelled their site so there was one available for us! Perfect!
Some family friends of ours - Barrie and Ardith Sigurdson - are also in Newfoundland right now, and we knew that they would be passing through Rocky Harbour on their way to their destination for the night. Cell service is almost non-existent out here if you're with Rogers, which both my parents and I have, and so we weren't able to give Barrie and Ardith a call to tell them where were, but we sent them an email in case they had email access (yay for free campground wi-fi!) letting them know where they could find us if they wanted to pop on in on their drive. Since we weren't sure if they were going to show up or not, we didn't do too much in the afternoon other than getting camp set up, making some lunch and relaxing. It was also pretty hot and humid - almost too hot to do anything too active - so we were in a bit of a lazy mood as well!
Finally, we figured "Ah, its getting later - they probably won't show up because they'll have to continue on their way" so we decided to go out for a drive and check out the area around Rocky Harbour. We pulled out of the campground, turned onto the next street, and guess who we saw - Barrie and Ardith! With that, we pulled a U-turn, and headed back to the campground to have a drink with them.
After a nice little visit with them, they did have to continue on their way because they still had a few hours of driving before they go to their destination for the evening, and so we went for our drive. We checked out the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse, which is on the edge of town, and then drove over to Norris Point (the neighbouring town). The harbour in Norris Point has a gorgeous view as you look out over the water and up at the mountains around the bay - gorgeous!
