Trujillo, the 3rd biggest city in Peru, is really nice with plenty to see and do in the area. Coming in off the night bus we were tired but the wasnt a cloud in the sky so we wandered around the city taking in the main square and the colourful colonial buildings and ornate windows.
In the afternoon we did a trip to some nearby pre inca ruins. Huaca Arco Iris (or Dragon) was a boring mud building with a restored reliefs. Chan Chan, the main pre inca ruin from the Chimu times, was marginally better although again just mud walls with restored reliefs and symbols. The last stop was the beach town of Huacachaco. This is famous for the Caballito de Totoras, reed boats used by the fishermen. It is also a surf town and whilst being small is actually quite nice. We walked town the pier for sunset and watched surfers in some very big waves. Back in Trujillo we went out in the evening with some of the people from the trip and came back to the hotel for more drinks.
The next day we headed to some other nearby ruins, Huaca del Sol and Huaca de la Luna (sun and moon). You can only visit the luna temple as the other is being restored but this was much more impressive than Chan Chan. This needed less restoration and a lot of the orginal designs and patterns could be seen. We met up again with Suzie and Jim who had to change their plans and head to Lima to sort Jim a replacement passport.
We still had another day in the area before our night bus to Huaraz so we headed back to Huacachaco for a great lunch and just to watch the fishermen coming and going on the rafts. Having had an uncomfortable experience on the night bus from Mancora with no toilet or air con (and especially with Jim getting robbed) we opted for a Cruz del Sur Cruzero bus and paid the extra for the downstairs where there are only nine seats. They are wider than normal and recline. Imagine flying first class on a plane!! It was a luxury but well worth it!
