We arrived in Lima after a 7 or 8 hour bus that left Huaraz at midday. Coming into Lima in the dark didnt exactly help dispell the myth of it as an unpleasent city! Certainly very different from the rest of Peru. We had arranged to be picked up by a hostel called the Stop and Drop and when we arrived there it was minging! Far to tired to lug our bags around Miraflores at that time of night and with Simone having picked up a stomach bug (presumably from the curry!) we just accepted our fate.
The next day, after no sleep from the music, we got out of the Stop and Drop asap and checked into a nice hotel (it even had 3 stars!!) to recouperate. The next couple of days in Lima were spent paying a visit to the pharmacist for some tablets that didnt work, a clinic to get some tablets that did, a visit to the Larcomar shopping centre overlooking the sea in Miraflores, and best of all we went to the cinema to see Indiana Jones 4 (a cultural highlight of the trip so far and particularly fun as our screen had a bar). We also sampled McDonalds, Burger King and Pizza Hut having not had fast food in months.
I did find the time to go into the old part of the city which was okay but nothing spectacular. I visited the San Francisco monastary and catacombs which was good. Miraflores was actually nice enough, seemed safe and was pleasant after dark (which made it different from Quito where nowhere felt safe). The city again provided another shift in climate from the clear skies of Trujillo and Huaraz to the constant cloud cover and cold of Lima. After a few days doing very little I was going a bit stir crazy so with Simone starting to feel a bit better it was time to move onto Ica!
