We left the hotel in a convoy of taxis for Mexico City's TAPO bus terminal for our two hour second class bus journey to Puebla. The bus was great - plenty of leg room etc. The journey passed some great scenery and on arrival in Puebla's bus terminal a convoy of taxis ferried us to the hotel which was in a excellent location only a block or two from the zocolo.
We all walked down to the zocolo to pick up maps and then wandered the city. We didn't have a lot of time which was a shame as it was very pleasant. The Zocolo park was full of Mexican families relaxing and playing with their children. We wandered around with Aussie Simone, Owen and Aysha going into the cathedral and visiting a small market. On one of the streets we noticed a local man reading a lucha libre flyer so Owen and I went over to ask him when and where it was on. It was that night and only a few blocks away. We had a bite to eat and headed back to the hotel for 2pm as the whole group was heading to a place called Cholula. The great thing about Trevor, our tour leader, is that he believes in travelling cheap. Rather than sending us off on some organised tour we always take the local buses. Cholula is something like the worlds 2nd largest pyramid (after one of the ones in Egypt). However very little of it is excavated so it just looks like a hill with a church on top. We walked up there for the views and then headed back down as it is possible to go inside. I used the student card I got when I did my masters a couple of years ago. For some reason it doesn't expire until 2010 so I was loving the fact it got me in for free! Inside was a bit disappointing. Just a long tunnel with several staircases leading both up and down that you couldn't explore. However once you came out the other end you see much more of the excavated pyramid which you couldn't from the street so it made it worthwhile. We sped through and out and went to visit the market so Simone could buy some tat. The Simones and I then bumped into Trevor who had recommended a blue corn tortilla with crushed flower buds and cheese. It sounded gross but melted cheese and some chilli sauce can make any meal great.
We met up with the rest of the group around 5ish and headed back to the hotel on the bus. I went on the internet for a bit and then we went out for some food with Owen and Aysha. We love Mexican food but twice a day was getting a bit much so we opted for some pasta. We headed for the lucha libre arena which started a 9pm. Some of the others were supposed to be meeting us there but we didn't see them. As the previous night was fairly quiet we had expected more of the same and had hoped for some better seats slightly closer to the ring. However they were sold out so once again we were up in the heavens but this time it was so packed we had to stand 2 deep at the very back! The atmosphere was excellent but the fighting not quite as high flying as the previous night. We stayed for over an hour before walking back around 10:15.
