Tokyo, Japan
We`ve discovered there is alot of love in Japan, for a lot of things....shoes, socks, phones, dogs in human clothes, raw fish, hello kitty, hair accessories... the list goes on! First impressions of Tokyo? This place is bizarre but very very cool!
We arrived, tired but awake on adrenalin, and managed to navigate the japanese rail system, only getting lost once we had got off the train!
First stop was harajuku, and what a place to welcome us to Japan! It was mental! The main street - Takes***a street (yes it really is called that!) is lined with crazy shops selling everything from pop socks to anime costumes, dog clothes to phone charms. A personal favourite of ours was pet palace, a bit like baby gap but for dogs!! Only ten minutes after finding this amusing shop, we spot a dog sporting lee jeans and a t-shirt - we tell no lies!!
Lunch was a conveyor belt sushi bar where Michelle tasted Sushi (including eel) for the very first time! The look on her face was priceless. I don`t think either of us could decide if it was a look of "mmm this is great" or "where can I spit this out?!". Luckily for both of us, she managed to keep it all down!
5 minutes from Harajuku was Shibuya, home to the "famous" crossing seen in Lost in Translation. This was about seven zebra crossings converging on a mini picadilly circus. We don`t think either of us have ever seen so many people! The crowd would patiently form on either side of the road, before moving en masse across when the man turned green! The word stampede springs to mind, but miraculously no one seems to bump into each other!
Our first night out in Tokyo, speaking and reading no Japanese, was interesting. Dinner consisted of a burger of unknown origin, in an unknown sauce, in a restaurant chosen because we liked the sign, and ordered by pointing at what the guy next door had!!
The next day didn`t get off to a good start, as we spent a good few hours, in the stifling heat walking around in circles looking for the Vietnamese embassy. We did however come across the only Danish Bakery in Japan, selling amazing Pastries!
What time we lost in the morning, we more than made up for in the afternoon, with a whirlwind sprint around Tokyo.... gardens, temples, pagodas, the zoo, a boat ride, finishing off with a 9 course traditional Japanese meal, complete with Sake!!
Needless to say we slept well last night!!!
