Hey Everyone,
We are now in Key West and have been since wednesday afternoon. We hired a car from Miami which cost about thirty pounds and drove 200 miles down to the Florida Keys. Drive was amazing, one straight road the whole way with the Gulf of Mexico one side and the Atlantic Ocean the other. Took a very long time, about four hours but was nice as most of it was a bridge across the sea. Hotel is fine, basic but a nice pool and a big room with two double beds. Its quite far from the main bit of the island, the "old town", and we only hired the car for travelling down so needed to find another way of transport. Most people use bicycles, scooters or electric cars, so we decided on a scooter. Its a double one (obviously Joe does the riding with me on the back!), but its quite fun and there's loads of parking everywhere so its easy to get around.
On the first night we checked out the main street called Duval Street where all the restaurants, bars and shops are. Its really nice, very touristy but lots of variety. Its very Southern, kind of cow-boy-like! But they're all really friendly and polite. Went to the Hard Rock Cafe for dinner, then to Malory Square after, which is one of the famous spots to watch the sunset. Every night it has entertainers which do things like acrobatics, sword swallowing and singing, as its very popular and gets very busy. Sunset was beautiful, and went behind a tiny island which had really expensive looking villas on it, they call it "millionaire row". There was also a massive cruise ship on the harbour, we thought it looked like Titanic it was that big! It said "Disney Wonder" on it with a picture of Mickey Mouse so we figured it was the Disney cruise, on its way to Orlando.......god knows how expensive it was to go on it!!
Checked out the beach yesterday, its a state park so cost two dollars to get in for the whole day and it was amazing. White sands and really clear warm water. Its quite windy so you cant tell how strong the sun is (although its so so hot here) so we both got rather burnt! Still have three beaches to check out though, as the island is only a few miles wide. I don't know if its on the news back there but theres a tropical storm around the area called "Bonnie". It was on all the tvs last night, saying that a big storm was on its way and not to go into the sea and avoid going out unless it was necessary! Its turned out that its missed us (except for a few showers) and hit Miami quite bad, which is lucky seeing as we've only just left there! Seems to be heading for the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico so everyones really worried on all the news channels. They've had a news crew here since yesterday which we've been watching on tv, as they expected it to hit the Keys quite badly but nothings really happened so when we went down to see them filming, the reporter woman was getting quite annoyed because she just wanted to leave!
Have taken loads of pictures but annoyingly we cant upload them on the hotel computer so we'll have to try do it when we move on somewhere else. Hope everyones good back home, we'll write again soon.
Lots of love,
Sarah and Joe
