Las Vegas. Big, bright, brash, tacky, cheesy. I had 5 days in Vegas and I think these 5 words go someway to attempting to sum up sin city. The Strip runs from Mandalay Bay casino/hotel up to the Stratosphere tower and everything you could imagine is in between. The casino's have to be seen to be believed - they are just that big. There are so, so, so many slot machines - including loads in the arrivals hall at the airport! It is just incredible that as soon as stepping off the plane you can put 25cents in and start to gamble! Further to that, when you walk into one of the megaresorts you really can't tell what time of day it is! Crazy. And there are people that love all this!?!? On the hotel side of things the Bellagio in particular was unbelievably classy. It is fronted by a lake which, every hour, has a fountain display done in time to music from Sinatra to the American national anthem.
Outside of wandering around casino's and not being able to believe what was happening I visited the Grand Canyon and the Hoover Dam.
The Hoover Dam tour was an interesting one - I went right into the dam and saw all the generators and got a feel for how big and impressive a structure it is. The canyon it is in was really great too - some good views beyond the dam down the Colorado River and the other way back up to Lake Mead.
I also went on the Grand Canyon south rim tour, which goes to the widest and deepest part of the canyon. Although it was 4 1/2 hours there and 4 1/2 hours back on a bus it was so worth it. The Grand Canyon is spectacular - it really should be seen by everyone it is that amazing. There was even some snow on the ground and on the upper edges of the canyon which added to the whole experience. It's hard to put into a few words what it looks like and what it's like to be there so all I'll say is this...go there and see for yourself.
