BULA!!
Welcome to my (slightly, ok very, late) blog from Fiji.
Fiji was incredible and what probably made it so great was that the people there are the friendliest people in the world without a doubt. On every new island I visited I was greated off the boat by hearty handshakes and an incredible keenness to learn everybodies name straight away. And they managed it! All the time there were there to help you, get to know you, have a laugh with you. And always so polite. Where else in the world would this happen? Even when I left one island to move onto another one the islanders where there on the beach to sing their goodbye song to us and shake us all by the hand as we left. It was truely amazing.
Leading on from this is 'Bula'. I heard it, and used it (!), all the time. It means hello, but in fact means so much more than that. It appears to typify the Fijian hospitality and way of life. It's use also got me into an interesting party. A hospital was holding their Christmas party and as I walked past everyone said Bula to me so of course I said Bula back. Then they invited me to join the party, have a drink with them and even a bit of a dance. Amazing!
So it was the Fijian's, I think, that made my time in Fiji. But I can't finish a blog without talking about the many beaches and resorts I visited. Without a doubt the best was Oarsman's Bay. If Carlsberg did beaches, it'd probably be the best beach in the world. And it was the best beach I've ever been too. A long stretch of gorgeous white sandy beach just 2 paces from the resort. And the clearest blue water anywhere. Awesome swimming, awesome sunbathing, just awesome. I also visited 5 other resorts - quite a number but I wanted to see a fair bit of the Yasawa Islands. Beachcomber was different - it took 10mins to walk around the island! and had a great sandy beach and a good bar. Manta Ray Island had some of the best snorkelling I've ever done - beautiful colourful fish and amazing coral.
Basically I would recommed Fiji to anyone. Some of the resorts and food were interesting but hey, it's Fiji expect that! And make the most of it!
