My last blog post from America.
I've been in Santa Monica, L.A. for the past 5 days and it has been o.k.- better than I expected. I'd spoken to quite a few people before arriving in L.A., none of whom seemed to have anything good to say about L.A. Still, I got the bus, all 1 1/2 hours, from downtown to Santa Monica. First impressions were far better than those of downtown L.A. which was dirty and dusty and didn't seem like a very nice place - I just didn't get a good vibe at all. Santa Monica however is the opposite. I had a couple of days just walking around exploring the pier, the beach and seeing what Santa Monica had to offer, though the best day of the last week was not spent in Santa Monica at all! I hired a car and drove up the Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Barbara, about 100 miles away. The drive was excellent - the road was almost on the beach the entire way up the coast giving some great views of Mailbu amongst other secluded beaches. Sanata Barbara itself was much like Santa Monica - it had the same feel to it of a Californian seaside town. The other notable thing I did in Santa Monica was go on a morning hike through Santa Monica organised by the hostel. Colin, the guide, was very well informed and took us on a great route down to the pier, along the beach and through all the little back streets of Santa Monica, speaking the entire way round giving a lot of good information about the town.
However, whilst Santa Monica sounds good there isn't a whole lot to do to be honest. Beside the beach, pier and coastal drive I struggled to think of things to do. Downtown L.A. did not appeal having been there twice and seeing what it was like. Hollywood, whilst having the walk of fame and the Chinese Theatre, bored me after a few hours. What else can you do after you've seen all your favourite stars on the walk of fame!?!? Besides, Hollywood appeared much like downtown - dirty, tacky and the people just didn't seem as nice.
Anyway, rant over. Today I fly to Fiji so for the next 10 days or so I will be sunning myself on a beach. I can't wait...
