So we get the bus to Chancho leaving from the Mercato bus station in Addis. Hectic and a bit scary.....especially when the minibus driver tells you "here, very dangerous" when we get out (cheers!). The bus station does not seemed to be organised in any way what so ever, however we managed to get the right bus.
We got talking to a man on the bus who owns a hotel so we ended up staying there - the Awash Hotel. We're not sure if it was a brothel (?). The toilet was literally a hole in the ground behind some corrugated iron....stinking!!
We arranged for his son (Dejene) to take us to Mugre Gorge the next day leaving at 11am. We hardly slept due to the noisy bar and then Dejene was knocking on our door at 5am!! We asked him if he was crazy and we established that he was on 'Ethiopia time' - we know realise that this is based on 12hr cycles so 11am our time is actually 5am their time!! They also have a different calandar and are 7years behind us................WHY??????????????
He took us to the gorge which is just amazing! To ge there we hitched a lift with a cement lorry to the pretty town of Durba. A leafy, peaceful village. We walked to a new church which was opening that day and were surrounded by children who looked like they'd never seen a white person before. We were welcomed by the top men in the church and invited to eat injera (carpet underlay) and drink talla (local home made beer) all of which was rank. The walk back up the gorge was a strenuous to say the least and very hot. However, this was made worth while when we came accross some Gelada baboons.
We moved location down the road because it was quiter. We stayed with a local family. The toilet was still a hole in the ground but much better condition. They did a coffee ceremony for us wherebey they roast the coffee beans and use frankenscence......reaaly nice. We were buzzing after the third cup!!! Now we know what a caffene hit is like!
After much negotiation we arranged for them to get us a minibus to take us to Bahir Dar......................more to come later.
Very behind with the blogs due to dia internet connection. It's really difficult to upload photos so sorry about that.
Peace out x x
