Other observations (on free internet whilst waiting to board):
- People drink, with straws, out of plastic bags.
- I didn't even mention the climate! Shocking neglect of a crucial geographical aspect, tut. Well, I'll put it this way, if you leave an air-conditioned building you'll find it nicely warm for the first 15 minutes or so, when you'll feel normal, but after that you'll realise that you are completely drenched in sweat and your clothes are stuck to you. But you reach a point of saturation and stay that way all day, so you get used to it.
- To overcome the abovementioned sweatiness, those in the know walk increeeeedibly slowly to avoid the point of saturation.
- Singaporeans find the word 'egg' hard to pronounce. One waiter at a restaurant shouted "eik" at me a good half dozen times until the addition of "chicken" before "eik" made me realise just what he was trying to say. Nice of him to ask if, as a veggie, I could have eik, though.
Naturewatch (as the offspring of conservationists this is my perogative): sparrows, screeching magpie-like birds, pigeons, a millipede, cockroaches (very small ones), large bats (but no idea what species, sorry), amazing tree ferns...
I was lonely in Singapore; traipsing around craning my head to look at buildings and trying but failing to take nice photos of myself in front of them. And then, at the quayside, a restaurant was playing an Ataris song really loud, so I stopped to sing along to the lyrics "I guess when it comes down to it; being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up, these are the best days of our lives; the only thing that matters is just following your heart and eventually you'll finally get it right" and I felt happier. Ahh, the power of American pop-punk.
