Semuc champey- what a beautiful place. We had to take 2 shuttle buses with some interesting people on the way. We left lake atitilan at 5 am, made our way to Antigua and then took a 9 hour journey to Lanquin.
On the way we witnessed several overturned trucks and road accidents. The roads are in poor conditions and drivers spend a lot of time avoiding potholes, forcing them to regularly drive on the wrong side of the road.
The last 30 kilometers of the journey were breathtaking; deep valleys with jungle vegetation and tiny houses dotted in between. It's a very common sight to see men using machetes to cut down tall grass on the side of the road.
Semuc champey is a series of tiered pools which formed in the limestone. A river flows underneath the pools. The pools were turquoise, perfectly clear and really refreshing to relax in after a "difficult" 600 step climb to the summit. Although difficult, it was well worth the climb to get the the beautiful viewing spot.
We slid down natural slides with the assistance of our guide, Toto and even swam underneath a waterfall! For the brave you could jump off a bridge but I was just happy to plunge from pool to pool surrounded by the jungle!
Our accommodation was basic but prefect for out needs. They even had wifi in the hostel, amazing considering how remote the place is! In our riverside hostel some of us took inflated tubes to relax on the river. I also spent time on the hammocks near the river.
Overall semuc champey is truly one of the most beautiful places you could ever visit and one I'll never forget!
