Beautiful Belize! When we crossed the border from Guatemala to Belize on our shuttle bus is was immediately clear we had moved into a different country, though a neighboring one. Firstly the currency still has a photo of queen Elizabeth 2nd and at the back native animals or Mayan ruins. Belize was once part of the Mayan empire but English is the main language spoken here as well as Creole and Spanish.
The houses here were completely different - larger and more often than not, on stilts. Large signs dotted the country with Christian quotes. Every village had some form an an Anglican or some type of Christian school- a legacy from the British.
We skipped through sweltering Belize city, making a bee line for Caye Caulker a beautiful tropical island. The island is a great mix of expats, carribean people and Mayan. Overall a very Jamaican feel. For food lobster is a great option here and we certainly enjoyed that and the jerk chicken!
The split is the place to be during the day. The split was formed during an earthquake, dividing the island in two.
We spent a day Snorkelling in the 2nd biggest coral reef in the world, a wonderful experience where we got to see a world full of tropical fish and got to swim with nursery sharks and sting rays! The water was pristine and the clarity was excellent.
